House of Pacific Relations (HPR)

The House of Pacific Relations (“HPR”) (Pacific as in “peaceful”), is the largest multicultural organization in the U.S., created 80 years ago by the City of San Diego. HPR is open to all races, creeds, colors, religions, national origins and political affiliations.

The purpose of HPR is to create a spirit of understanding, tolerance and goodwill among the national and ethnic groups represented in the community. HPR implements its purpose by presenting educational, civic, cultural, and artistic programs.

Balboa Park is home to HPR, International Cottages, a village of historic 1935 charming and picturesque exposition cottages representing 33 nations and ethnicities from around the world. The International Cottages represent not the political entities recognized as countries or regions, but their cultures.

The cottages coexist side by side, sharing their cultures, music, dance, art, and food with each other and the community at large thereby increasing tolerance, mutual trust and respect.
